Slow motion, painfully cool.
Black ripples in a heart-shaped pool.
Float round with a silvery air.
They know your name, but you don’t know theirs.
Gaze dropping, they cut to the quick.
You feel that black vine slowly starting to twist.
So pour yourself another bitter drink
And pour yourself in your new outfit.
The best liars make ‘em wanna shoot from the hip.
Promise something golden as you hid it up your sleeve.
Said we couldn’t get enough.
Maybe something comes of this, but can we just agree
Whatever it is, you know it isn’t love.
I see that black vine. It’s twisting up in your heart.
Don’t wanna bore ya, my little rock and roller.
And when the desperate, haunted hearts come to call.
Well who can blame you?
So tell me when it came to all this madness
Baby, tell the truth.
You love that black vine.
It’s tangled up in me and you. So tell me
Baby, what’s the truth?
You love that black vine, it’s tangled up in me and you.
Soft kiss, flick of the wrist. Oh how the zipper slips.
Tall glass, they’re ready to sip
So leave ‘em nothing but an empty pit.
Cold fame, they’re calling your name.
You see those red faces sipping gasoline.
And as your thoughts start to sink or swim
A single thorn breaks through the skin.
You find that little bit of poison is flowing again.
Blacked out, you’re better than gold.
You’re gonna run to the ground.
I think you like something to hold
When it’s choking you out.
Tough talk from a poison tongue.
The vine grew on it’s own.
The time that you left us for something better.
You left your heart of stone.
You found that the thrill of the game was over
And now you’re all alone.
Rip-roaring power pop with all the deadpan wit and guitar noise of early Weezer and legitimized by the songwriting chops of Tom Petty and Elvis Costello. North by North
Lost track of these guys for a couple years, then saw the Tiny Desk concert come up in my feed. I've had the album on loop on Spotify since Friday.
This song in particular has been stuck in my head all afternoon. quiksilv26
A fantastic album. I can see why they didn't continue under the name The Evens, as it's a different sound with the bass added. Coriky is the Evens + Joe Lally from Fugazi on bass. If you can imagine The Evens with a slightly more funky, aggressive sound like Fugazi... that's what you get! And there's no way that can ever go wrong. What a great debut album!! smiledozer
